Ο Θωμάς Μπαρτζάνας είναι Καθηγητής και Αντιπρύτανης Έρευνας, Οικονομικών και Ανάπτυξης στο Γεωπονικό Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών. Είναι Γεωπόνος με διδακτορικές σπουδές στη γεωργική μηχανική στο Πανεπιστήμιο Θεσσαλίας και στο INRAE (Station deBioclimatologie) και μεταδιδακτορική εξειδίκευση στη μηχανική για γεωργικές εφαρμογές (Aarhus University, Department of Engineering). Τα ερευνητικά του ενδιαφέροντα επικεντρώνονται στην ανάπτυξη, αξιολόγηση και εφαρμογή νέων τεχνικών και τεχνολογιών στο γεωργικό τομέα (smart farming) στις τεχνολογίες και συστήματα παραγωγής αγροτικών προϊόντων σε ελεγχόμενες συνθήκες (controlled environment agriculture), στην ανάπτυξη μεθόδων και διεργασιών μείωσης των εισροών στην αγροτική παραγωγή και τον προσδιορισμό του περιβαλλοντικού αποτυπώματος (environmental footprint) σε όλα τα συστήματα αγροτικής παραγωγής με τη μέθοδο της ανάλυσης κύκλου ζωής (LCA). Έχει μετέχει ως Συντονιστής ή/και Ερευνητής σε 50 εθνικά (ΓΓΕΚ) και ευρωπαϊκά (FP6, FP7, H2020, HEU) ερευνητικά πρόγραμμα και έχει περισσότερες από 350 δημοσιεύσεις σε διεθνή περιοδικά και πρακτικά συνεδριών (h-index 33 / 5060 citations). Είναι Associate Editor στο περιοδικό Biosystems Engineering, αξιολογητής, ευρωπαϊκών προγραμμάτων και μέλος συναφών επιστημονικών ενώσεων. Είναι vice-chair και υπεύθυνος για τα συστήματα γεωργικής παραγωγής στο Section II (Structures and Environment) του CIGR (InternationalCommission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering), και μέλος του επιστημονικού συμβουλίου της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης για την ελεύθερη πρόσβαση σε επιστημονικά αποτελέσματα στις Γεωπονικές Επιστήμες. 

Thomas Bartzanas, Professor, Agricultural University of Athens, Lab of Farm Structures, Director | Vice Rector for Research, Finance and Development

Thomas Bartzanas is Vice Rector for Research, Finance and Development, Professor and Director of the Lab of Farm Structures at the Agricultural University of Athens. He is Chairman of the Board of Smart Agro Hub A.E, an AUA’s spin-off with focus on smart farming and sustainability. He is an agricultural engineer, with a PhD in agricultural constructions at the University of Thessaly and the Bioclimatology station of INRA in France and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Aarhus in Denmark (Department of Engineering). His research interests focus on the development, evaluation and application of new techniques and technologies in controlled environment production systems (greenhouses, vertical farming systems, hydroponic systems, livestock buildings), the sustainable and smart use of natural resources in the agrofood sector and the assessment of the environmental impact (environmental footprint) in the agrifood sector using the life cycle analysis. He has participated as a Coordinator and / or Researcher in 50 national and European research programs and has more than 350 publications in international journals and conference proceedings (h-index 33 / 5060 citations). Thomas is Associate Editor in Biosystems Engineering and member of the EurAgEng, vice-chair in the Structures & Environment Committee of CIGR and member of the Scientific Council of the European Union, in the Directorate for Research and Innovation for open access to research results in the field of "Agricultural Sciences".
